10:24 pm - REVIEW: JSA Classified #28, "Problem Solved" JSA Classified issue number 28 was written by Fabian Nicezia and drawn by Steve Uy.
JSA Classified, lately, has done a lot of one-part or two-part stories focusing on various members of the Justice Society of America, the latest incarnation of the very first superhero team ever. This issue is a one-shot, focusing on Jakeem Thunder.

06:12 am - REVIEW: A Path to Myself Okay! So, this one's a blog review - and not just any blog, but a close friend's. Woo!
A Path To Myself, located at http://apathtomyself.blogspot.com/ , is a log of one person's journey to self-discovery. That probably sounds really pretentious, but it's good. The author goes deep, yanks out the underpinnings of his soul, and shows them off.
The rate of posting isn't at all consistent, but that's not surprising for a relatively new blog (cough cough this one). And, after all, the world does revolve around him.

06:12 pm - Review: Transformers (spoiler-free) Short and unspoilery review:
So... it was pretty awesome, altogether. It started off awesome, got kinda dumb toward the middle (he peed on the guy!), and then became awesome again.
It was definitely one of those big dumb action movies, but it held together well, despite trying to do a lot of things at once. The special effects, naturally, were awesome. The Decepticons were much more interesting than the Autobots, overall, but that's the nature of the beast. And I was actually interested in the "human interest" bits. (Well, the main character's, anyway. The others were just a mite too cheesy.)
Not sure if I'm ever going to watch it again, but I had fun. Current Mood: recumbent Current Music: Brian Eno, "Windows Welcome Music"

07:26 pm - REVIEW: "Robots and Empire", by Isaac Asimov Yay! A book review, this time.
Robots and Empire is the fourth and final book in Isaac Asimov's "Robot Detective" series; it helps tie together many of his works, including his "Foundation" series, his "Galactic Empire" series, and several of his other "Robot" stories, including some of the ones in I, Robot.
I have to compare Robots and Empire to the previous book in the series, The Robots of Dawn. Dawn also attempted to tie the books together, but was much clumsier about it. (For instance, one character, near the end, basically goes off on a speech about "If there is eventually a science of predicting human reactions, and if it is eventually called "psychohistory", and if a little old guy in a wheelchair uses it to guide a galactic empire...") Empire is much smoother, with the themes woven in with the book's main plot. (Not that there aren't a few clunkers in there, but...)
Overall, I quite liked it, though it does have some of the typical Asimov problems; the characters don't talk so much as explain things to each other. Still, it's a good science fiction adventure, and has some clever subversions of the form in general and Asimov in specific.

10:13 am - REVIEW: Limited-Edition Carnival Flavors Skittles Yes, another food review. Dangit, I'm gonna finish Robots and Empire soon!
Anyway. These are good stuff. They're one of the many, many limited-edition flavors the big candy companies - in this case, M&M/Mars - have been putting out lately.
These ones are obviously based off of "carnival" flavors. What this seems to mean, in practice, is that they're incredibly sweet and sugary. I'm glad I didn't pick up more than the one grocery-store-checkout-sized bag, because I'd probably drive myself into insulin shock. Taken a few at a time, though, they're delicious, and match up pretty well with the flavors they're supposed to emulate.
The five flavors are Cotton Candy, Candy Apple, Bubble Gum, Green Slushy, and Red Licorice. Cotton Candy is light blue, and really does taste like cotton candy -- not surprising, I suppose, since it's basically the same kind of stuff, but nice nonetheless. Candy Apple is off-white. It really does have an appley flavor, quite different from the typical "sour apple" that they put in most candy products. Not much of a caramel flavor, though. Bubble Gum is pink, and, again, faithful to the original (what they call "original"-flavor bubble gum), although I've never really associated bubble gum with carnivals. Taffy, maybe, or that brick of pink candy popcorn... Anyway. Green Slushy is, of course, green, and might be my favorite of this set; it really does replicate that sort of sour-lime-y taste that a good ice-and-syrup concoction gives you. Finally, Red Licorice is red. It definitely tastes licorice-y, but with this odd... sort of chemical flavor wrapped around it. Still pretty good.
And now, I have a sugar headache. Ow. Current Mood: hyper Current Music: Lou Bonnevie, "Rockin' The Beat"

01:21 pm - REVIEW: Emerald of California Glazed Walnuts 'n Cashew: Honey Dijon Okay, this is a food review; the Honey Dijon-flavor Glazed Walnuts 'n Cashew made by Emerald of California, in case the title wasn't clear.
Man. These are awesome. I usually don't even like walnuts, but the tangy sweetness of the coating-seasoning-stuff goes really well with the bitterness of the walnut. The cashews aren't quite as good, but this means that they're simply "delicious" rather than "brain-breakingly awesome". Nutritionally, while they are junk food, they're better for you than potato chips or M&Ms.
There's a bunch of different flavors, apparently, but I've only tried the Chocolate Brownie (which was pretty good, but not as good as this).

12:00 am - REVIEW: "The Man Song" World of Warcraft video All righty, since it's an online video I'm reviewing, here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vG_gLMMSn1E
And I should probably also point out that it was made by someone I know (at least, the video part); so credit on that side goes to hawks.
So. As for the song itself... I've never really liked this kind of humor, personally; not only is "ha ha yeah horrible relationship", but it gives me flashbacks to Andy Capp, and believe me, you do not want that. That said, this guy pulls it off well; keeping it within the realm of self-parody helps a lot, and his delivery really sells it, although he sometimes gets so quiet on the "mumbling" parts that it's hard to make out. It was sung by Sean Morey, so hats off to him.
The video, meanwhile, compliments the song well. Good snychronization with the lyrics, and the pink-haired gnome is perfect. While not exactly tasking the WoW engine, it was visually quite nice. I didn't really like the fonts used at the beginning and end, though. Bit cheesy. But that's a minor cavil. (I've always wanted to say that!)
So, I give this video... um... a Q out of five.
